Cowboy War in Kansas – Feb. 1887

Leoti - The Cowboy War in Kansas, Cowboys Hired to Kill, Three Shot Dead, A Second Dodge City were the headlines in the New York Times and the San Francisco Examiner, and other national newspapers in the spring of 1887. The “Bloodiest of Them All” was the title given to the county seat fight between Coronado and Leoti with Leoti finally being named the seat of Wichita County.

That unsettled period brought many outsiders to the county, with Leoti bringing in “toughs” from Wallace County and Coronado bringing in lawmen and gunfighters from the Dodge City area.  Luke Short, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Bat Masterson, Bill Tilghman, Red Loomis, Jim Masterson, Pat and Mike Sughrue all posed for the photograph that was taken in front of the Wichita County Bank in Coronado sometime that spring.

The photograph collection of this historic print is being offered to the public in the form of limited edition prints, posters and post cards. All numbered prints are images of an original photograph owned and copyrighted by the Wichita County Historical Society. They have been printed with a four-color ink process in sepia tones, and on the highest quality paper.

This scene was taken in front of the Wichita County Bank in the town of Coronado around the time of the famous fight. There are very few photographs (if any) of these famous gunfighters and lawmen together. Telegrams, stagecoaches, guns and a loyal friendship brought them together at the drop at a hat! They loved the excitement and adrenalin flow of an altercation. Even though they were not involved in the actual gunfight, they were here in Wichita County to intimidate at the voting polls.

All donations to the society are tax-deductible.

A Certificate of Authenticity is included with all prints.

 These prints are 16" X 13"
